This Litter-Robot 4 Review is the result of two weeks of hands-on testing in a multi-cat home. For many cat owners, litter box maintenance is the bane of their daily routine. In fact, for lots of cat lovers, the litter box is the main reason they don't bring a cat into their home. Can an automatic litter box solve those problems and maybe even get more cats into more homes?
The Litter-Robot 4 is a premium, self-cleaning litter box designed for convenience and hygiene–something all cat owners want. But is it worth the price tag? As all cat owners know, the most important question isn’t about the features or functionality of the tech. Instead, the most important question is: Will my cats use it?
This Litter-Robot 4 Review covers the key features of Whisker's flagship automatic litter box: functionality, odor control, waste management, ease of use, durability, maintenance, and overall value, plus an assessment of cats' real-world reaction and willingness to use the litter box.
Because every cat, home, and need is different, it’s vital to research automatic litter boxes before purchasing. They come with a steeper price tag than the traditional litter box, so we will also consider whether this high-tech automatic litter box is worth the investment.

What Is the Litter-Robot 4?

The Litter-Robot 4 is a pet tech innovation from Whisker (formerly AutoPets). Michigan-based Whisker makes life with your pets endlessly better, according to the company’s website.
The Litter-Robot 4 is one of the brand’s fully automatic litter boxes with a rotating sifting mechanism. It includes built-in odor control features and can work with various litter types–a good thing for cats who are resistant to change. It also syncs up to a mobile app that helps cat owners monitor not only the function of the robot, but their cat’s weight, habits, and routine.
This hands-free litter box solution differs from others on the market with three crucial features:

Never Scoop Again® with the Whisker Litter-Robot, the smart self-cleaning automatic litter box. Monitor visits and track weights for better overall care in the Whisker® app. Multi-cat friendly.

Large Waste Drawer
First, the larger waste drawer doesn’t have to be emptied as frequently as some competitors’ drawers, making it an especially great litter box for multiple cats. The app monitors its fill level, too, so there’s no guessing or checking required.
Whisper Quiet
Second, the Litter-Robot 4 uses custom QuietSift™ self-cleaning cycles to benefit skittish cats (and won’t wake you up at night). There are no loud motorized noises or clunking sounds. Instead, it runs almost silently in the background.
Supports Multi-Cat Households
And, third, the litter box supports multi-cat households. In fact, once the app is set up with your cats’ profiles, the robot can detect which cat is using the box based on their weights. This is particularly helpful if you’re monitoring a health condition or want to ensure your cats are consistent with their litter box usage. In our test, we were able to note our senior cat losing a small amount of weight from the WiFi-enabled app and adjust her routine immediately.
A Closer Look at Litter-Robot 4
Odor Control & Waste Management
With a traditional litter box, once the cat goes to the bathroom, the odor lingers even with the best clumping litter. For cats who aren’t adept at burying their bathroom, the odor is even worse until you can scoop. The Litter-Robot 4 effectively reduces odors compared to traditional litter boxes. In addition to the automatic sifting, the carbon filter and the optional OdorTrap™ system work together to provide an odor-free experience.
The waste drawer collects your cat’s waste after each use. The large capacity means you only have to empty it approximately once each week, though the Whisker app keeps you posted on the drawer’s capacity so you know exactly when to empty.
Ease of Setup & Use
Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 comes mostly assembled–just a couple easy steps out of the box to have it up and running. Installing the app is simple, too, and it’s available on both Apple and Google. The Whisker app walks you through each step in the process so that anyone who isn’t tech-savvy can be successful. Once everything is up and running, set up your cat’s profile in the Whisker app to ensure you’ll have accurate tracking data.
My cats, Newt and Ripley, were immediately curious. I placed the robot litter box next to their regular box and filled it with their usual litter. Newt, my confident cat, explored it and used it almost immediately.

The cycle time is delayed so that it can’t accidentally start running when a cat is inside. Ripley, my stereotypical scaredy cat, stayed nearby watching and hissed when the sifter started to run. Because of that, she was slower to warm up to the Litter-Robot. However, several weeks later, both use it consistently without any hesitation. In a multi-cat household, the Whisker app differentiates between cats by their weight.
The only challenge? Our previous boxes were top-entry to keep my curious puppy out of the box. The Litter-Robot 4 has a large entrance right at pit-bull-puppy nose height. She triggers the sensors when she pokes her face into the robot, which causes it to cycle an extra time or two, but it’s easy for me to know when that happens from the app.
When a weight registers other than Newt and Ripley, I remember to go close the laundry room door!
Durability & Build Quality
Overall, the Litter-Robot 4 is a solid, durable litter box. Despite its size and tech-forward design, the noise levels during operation are reportedly lower than in previous models. In our home, it lives in the laundry room off the kitchen, and no one can hear it running–or smell it!–while we’re cooking and eating.
Maintenance & Cleaning
The absolute best part of the Litter-Robot 4 is the ease of removing waste. Simply slide out the drawer, tie up the plastic bag liner, and toss. Then, replace the liner with a fresh bag. While you can purchase specific bags from the company, I’ve been using standard grocery bags, and those work just fine. It only needs to be cleaned about once a week and never more than twice a week for my two cats. To top off the litter, pour your preferred litter into the dome until you reach the clearly-marked fill line.
For maintenance, I wipe down the exterior once a week to keep it clean and dust-free. Occasionally, I receive an error code or notice that the light panel has changed from blue to yellow, at which point I hit the button to run a cycle, and it goes back to normal. Otherwise, it’s a set-it-and-forget-it operation.

Customer Feedback & Real-World Experiences
The Litter-Robot price is often a complaint, though for anyone who wants a hands-free, odor-free, scoop-free litter box, the investment is worthwhile.
The second most common criticism is the size. The Litter-Robot 4 is huge, coming in at 29 inches tall, 22 inches wide, and 27 inches deep. Finding a spot for the robot might prove difficult in a crowded home or small apartment.
However, the Litter-Robot 4 is popular among cat owners who want convenience, cleanliness, and odor control. It’s also a great option for disabled adults who can’t bend down to scoop or scrape the bottom of a traditional litter box.
Another benefit is that the robot litter box works with most litters, so you can continue to use what your cat already prefers, unlike some other automatic litter boxes that require you to switch to a specific litter.
Litter-Robot 4 Specs: Dimensions, Weight & Capacity
Before buying, check that the Litter-Robot 4 actually fits your space and your cats. Here are the exact dimensions, weight limits, and capacity numbers (the same data Whisker publishes), in one place.
If you've got a small apartment or live-in 1-cat household where 29 inches of height is too much, the more compact Litter-Robot EVO ($599) is a better fit. See our hands-on EVO review for the side-by-side.
Is the Litter-Robot 4 Safe?
Several built-in features keep your cat safe while the box is in use and when it isn't. Motion sensors detect when your cat enters and exits, and they're sensitive enough to even know when my dog sticks her head into the robot, even if she doesn't touch the bottom. For the broader vet's-eye view of which cats can and cannot safely use any automatic litter box (kittens, arthritic cats, anxious cats, pregnancy/toxoplasmosis context), see our full guide to whether automatic litter boxes are safe for cats.
It does not have a maximum weight limit for cats, though kittens under 3 pounds will not trigger the sensors. However, small kittens can still use it, just not in automatic mode.

The robot also has several lighting options for the interior to help your cat navigate to the box even in the dark.
If you need to monitor your cat closely, you can purchase a webcam mount that works with any camera of your choices.
The Litter-Robot 4 is ideal for busy pet parents who can’t stop and scoop throughout the day, for multi-cat homes, and for odor-conscious owners. It’s not a great fit for tiny kittens or for cats who are afraid of the movement and sounds.

Compared to other self-cleaning litter boxes, it’s more expensive but offers far more features so is worth the high price if you’re looking for a robotic option that is odor-free, allows you to use your own litter, and connects to an app to monitor your cat’s health.
Common Litter-Robot 4 Problems (and How to Fix Them)
Across two years of ownership and 200+ Reddit threads in r/litterrobot, the same handful of issues come up repeatedly. None of them are deal-breakers, but knowing them upfront helps you decide whether the LR4 is worth $699 for your household.
"Drawer is full" alert when the drawer isn't full. Usually caused by litter buildup around the drawer sensor. Pull out the drawer, wipe the sensor (small black circle on the underside of the base), and re-seat. Solves it 9 times out of 10.
Weight sensor reading wrong. Most commonly happens when the LR4 sits on carpet without the included carpet kit. Place on a hard surface or use the carpet tray accessory ($30). Multi-cat households also need to set up Cat Profiles in the Whisker app for the sensor to differentiate.
Cycle won't complete or repeats. Almost always litter type. The LR4 requires clumping clay litter (no crystal, paper, pellets, or tofu). If you switched litters recently, that's the cause. Switch back to a clumping clay brand like Dr. Elsey's Ultra or World's Best. Some cats reject a new litter so strongly they stop using the box entirely: see our guide on why your cat may be peeing outside the litter box for the full diagnostic flow.
Cat under 3 lbs not triggering. The LR4's sensors require 3 lbs minimum. Tiny kittens won't activate the cleaning cycle. Use a traditional litter box until they hit 3 lbs (around 8-12 weeks for most breeds).
App disconnects from Wi-Fi. The LR4 only supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, not 5 GHz. If your router defaults to 5 GHz for the LR4, set up a 2.4 GHz network or use a dual-band SSID workaround. Most modern routers handle this automatically.
Litter-Robot 4 vs Litter-Robot 3: Should You Upgrade?
If you already own a Litter-Robot 3 Connect, the upgrade question is real. The LR3 was the bestseller for years and still has loyal owners. Quick verdict: the LR4 is meaningfully better in three ways (quieter QuietSift mechanism, larger waste drawer, app-tracked cat weight and usage), and the LR3 has been discontinued by Whisker. For a full feature-by-feature comparison of the LR3, LR4, LR5, and EVO, see our Litter-Robot 4 vs 5 vs EVO buyer's guide.
Upgrade from LR3 to LR4 if: you have noise-sensitive cats (the LR4 is dramatically quieter), you have more than one cat (the larger drawer + app weight tracking matters), or your LR3 is out of warranty and needs repair. Skip the upgrade if: your LR3 still works fine for a single cat and you don't use the app. The LR3's core function is solid, and the LR4 isn't $699 better at the basics.
Litter-Robot 4 FAQ
The Litter-Robot 4 was released by Whisker in May 2022. It replaced the Litter-Robot 3 Connect as the flagship model. The Litter-Robot 5 launched in late 2025, but the LR4 remains in production and is still recommended by Whisker for multi-cat homes (up to 4 cats).
Most Litter-Robot 4 owners report 5+ years of reliable use. Whisker's 1-year base warranty (3 years with the optional FullCircle plan) covers the motor and electronics. Mechanical wear shows up first on the rubber drawer seal, which is a $15 replaceable part. The globe itself is rated for thousands of cycles.
No upper weight limit — the LR4 works with cats up to 25 pounds or more. The minimum weight to trigger the sensors is 3 pounds, which excludes very young kittens. For households with both kittens and adult cats, run the LR4 in manual cycle mode until the kitten hits 3 lbs.
Whisker requires clumping clay litter for the LR4 to function correctly. Avoid crystal, silica, paper, pellet, pine, and tofu litters — they don't clump in the rotation cycle and will jam or cause repeated cycles. Compatible brands include Dr. Elsey's Ultra, World's Best Cat Litter, Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal, and Tidy Cats Free & Clean.
For multi-cat homes (2+), busy households, or owners with mobility limitations that make daily scooping hard — yes. The time savings (no daily scooping for 2+ years), odor control, and app-based health tracking justify the price. For single-cat homes with no scooping aversion, the value is harder to justify versus a $20 traditional box. The compact Litter-Robot EVO at $599 is a better entry point if budget is the concern.
- The Litter-Robot 4 provides excellent odor control and automation, but it is expensive.
- It’s best for cat owners who want or need hands-free maintenance, convenience, and cleanliness. It’s not a good choice for budget-conscious buyers or for kittens under 3 pounds.
- It’s worth it for those cat owners who are willing to pay a premium for convenience and cleanliness.
