Hidden Dangers of Toxic Household Item to Pets

“There is one item that you might have in your home that is so deadly to pets that just one lick can take their life,” Dr. Whtitington explained on TikTok

Mixodil, or Rogaine, is “so toxic” that even the slightest exposure to pets can be life-threatening, especially to cats.

Many commenters soon chimed in, stating they would no longer use the product or switch to something else to protect their pets.

He says simply walking across a spill or licking the residue from your skin can cause severe toxicity. This can be incredibly dangers to pets.

What is Minoxidil and How Does it Work?

Minoxidil, or Rogaine, stimulates hair growth in adult men and women. The product is available in a foam or solution (1). Mayo Clinic indicates it should never be applied to any other parts of the body and not to double the dose.

Using too much minoxidil or doing so off-label can cause it to absorb into the body and affect the heart and blood vessels. The exact way minoxidil works to help grow hair is not known.

Unique Risk of Minoxidil to Cats

According to Dr. Whittington, cats are more sensitive to minoxidil because their bodies cannot metabolize it. Since they do not have the proper enzymes, they cannot break minoxidil down. Even the smallest exposure can be deadly.

Because cats are meticulous about self-grooming, should they lick the product, they can become very sick and even die.

The Donovan Hair Clinic (2) indicates cats can become sick from licking their owners’ skin or a pillowcase where their owners slept. If they come into contact with even a low dose, you must seek veterinary help immediately.

How to Prevent Accidental Minoxidil Exposure

If you use minoxidil, Dr. Whittington suggests locking it up, keeping it away from pets, washing your hands after application, and cleaning up spills immediately.

Another commenter stated, “As a vet, I’m so here for MDs educating about this kind of thing!!”

Dispose of any used applicators or containers out of pets’ reach to prevent accidental exposure. By keeping the product safely away from your dog or cat, you are prioritizing their health and well-being. A toxic household item can wreak havoc on pets.

What To Do If You Suspect Minoxidil Poisoning

Now that you know Minoxidil is a toxic household item, here’s additional help. If you believe your dog or cat came into contact with minoxidil, here are the steps to follow:

  1. Contact a veterinarian or veterinary emergency clinic immediately and do not delay.
  2. Never induce vomiting, as this can worsen the situation.
  3. Follow veterinarian orders, including possible hospitalization if your pet needs intensive care.
  4. Show your veterinarian the container of the product so they have it handy.
  5. Always wash your hands after product usage to prevent any future issues.
