Have you heard of PEMF for Dogs and Cats? How about infrared light therapy for dogs? The HigherDOSE pet bed combines these two promising non-invasive therapies into a single, cozy device for pets.

We decided to test it out on June, a 13-year-old Beagle and Border Collie mix with joint issues that occasionally have to be treated with NSAIDs.

What is PEMF for Dogs and Cats?

PEMF stands for Pulsed electromagnetic field. PEMF therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that uses short bursts of magnetic energy to interact with the body’s tissues (1). These magnetic pulses can create small electrical signals in the body, which is part of how PEMF is thought to support natural processes like circulation, relaxation, and tissue recovery.

For example, bone cells generate small electrical currents under mechanical stress (this is part of how bones adapt and grow). The idea behind PEMF is that the magnetic pulses mimic that kind of physical signal, triggering cells to respond.

Bone cells, nerve cells, and endothelial cells (which line blood vessels) can be sensitive to electrical and magnetic changes. This is one reason PEMF has been studied in humans for bone healing, inflammation, and circulation (1).

When it comes to pets, some clinical research shows that PEMF therapy mayhelp dogs with joint pain and movement problems. One study on dogs with osteoarthritis found that dogs treated with PEMF had “significant improvements in gait symmetry” over several weeks compared with a placebo group (2). This rings true based on our direct experience with June, but more on that later.

When it comes to using PEMF, magnetic pulses are delivered in brief intervals rather than continuously. Different pulse patterns can be used, depending on the device and purpose. When it comes to the HigherDOSE Infrared PEMF pet bed, there are two levels of heat and six PEMF levels, designed for different outcomes.

Level Frequency Recommended Use
13 HzDeep sleep and rest
27.8 HzGrounding and calmness
310 HzDaily stress relief
423Enhance healthy aging
530Active lifestyle recovery
660Boost energy and performance

What is Infrared Heat for Dogs and Cats?

Infrared heat gently warms your pet’s body directly in a way similar to sunlight. It should feel calming and comforting, especially for stiff or sore pets, without overheating the room.

What Is the HigherDOSE Infrared PEMF Pet Bed?

Now that we have a base-level understanding of the technology, let’s explore the HigherDose bed. At its most basic, this is a curved bed, with a sturdy-but-soft back support and a washable linen cover. Next comes the PEMF magic:

  • Infrared heat: Gentle warming to support circulation and relaxation.
  • PEMF therapy: Low-frequency electromagnetic pulses used in human and veterinary wellness settings

The features above are delivered though a built-in panel along the bottom of the bed that is connected via bite-resistant cable to a simple controller. The bed needs to be used on a flat, stable surface indoors and cannot be used near any flammable materials due to the heat feature.

The company, which was founded by “two female biohackers,” Lauren Berlingeri and Katie Kaps, offers multiple nature-inspired wellness tools such as a human PEMF mat and infrared sauna blanket (3). Its recommended uses for the pet bed align seamlessly with its offerings for pet parents:  Calming anxious pets Relieving stiff joints and sore muscles

  • Speeding recovery after everything from zoomies to injury
  • Boosting Mobility

Keep in mind these are potential benefits, many seen in controlled studies (2).

A Closer Look: Our Review and First-Hand Impressions

Right off the bat, I’m going to say that if you have a dog or cat dealing with any type of stiffness, PEMF for dogs and cats is worth a try. Between reviewing the literature and trying the HigherDOSE Infrared PEMF pet bed on my own dog, I’m a fan of this technology.

It helps that HigherDOSE offers a 120-day money-back guarantee and a 1-year limited warranty, since this bed is a major investment for most.

When the bed arrives, setup is a snap. HigherDOSE provides a quick start guide and an easy-to-read user manual. You basically run the cord from the bottom of the bed, through an opening in the back, then connect it to the controller and plug it in.

It is recommended to begin with the lowest heat and PEMF settings for short sessions to see how your dog does. It’s also important to supervise your dog.

June is a nester when she sleeps. She took to the curved shape of the bed immediately. As an avid heated-blanket user (along with me) she went for the heat right away.

While the PEMF was on setting 1, she treated the bed normally, but when I tried setting 2 I began to notice her behavior shifting. June is 13 and has a younger “brother,” Ramsey. He is a 1-year-old Lab and Cattle Dog mix who treats her just like any younger brother treats his sister. He bugs her until she plays.

While she was laying on her new bed at level 2, she was more reluctant than usual to get fully off the bed and join him! She even got up to see what he was doing, but kept her back legs on the bed. This was a positive early sign.

As the days passed, we tested out sessions on different levels, and 3 seems to be her favorite. She settles in, laying her body and head fully down for nap sessions.

As for results, in just a few week’s time I have noticed June running faster and longer after her brother during play time in the yard. She has also started picking up his tennis ball, luring him to chase her. Usually he is the one to initiate this sort of play. It has been heartening to see her acting younger again.

Safety Considerations and Who It’s Best For

One interesting warning you’ll see in the User Manual is a safety warning that reads, “If you or anyone in your household has an implanted medical device such as a pacemaker, cochlear implant, or insulin pump, consult your physician before using or sitting near the HigherDOSE Infrared PEMF Pet Bed while it is operating. If your pet has any known medical conditions, sensitivities, or recent injuries, consult your veterinarian before use. This product is not intended for human use.”

This is a standard precautionary warning that’s included because PEMF beds give off electromagnetic pulses. These pulses are low-level and considered safe for most people and pets but implanted medical devices also rely on electrical signals to work properly. Strong or nearby electromagnetic fields can theoretically interfere with how those devices send or receive signals. Even though the risk is low, manufacturers are required to include a warning anytime electromagnetic energy is involved.

While I think it’s a good sign that the company makes this safety precaution a priority, I also took it as a sign that the bed works!

Some other features to note are that the bed runs on 20-minute PEMF cycles and 3-hour heat cycles. While this doesn’t mean you should leave your pet unattended with the bed, it is a nice precaution.

The bed is intended for any pet that may benefit from increased recovery. This could be a senior pet, an anxious pet, or an active pet that needs deep rest. Pets with heat sensitivity or an inability to get up on their own are not recommended candidates. Those with any active medical condition will need veterinary clearance.

Final Verdict

A Final Verdict

  • This bed is a luxury item. It feels great to have and it provides an extra level of support for my aging girl. For anyone who has been lucky enough to care for a senior dog or cat, there is no better feeling than giving them every comfort you can, so they have the opportunity to age with dignity. Any time I see June curled up for a session in her bed, or keeping up with her “baby” brother, it really does make me feel good and I think it makes her feel good too.
  • That said, if this bed is not in someone’s price range, I would completely understand. This is something to consider and save up for rather than buy on a whim.
  • I wholeheartedly recommend this bed to anyone who has the budget for it and a pet that could use a little support in their mobility, energy, and mood. I’m excited to see a human wellness company applying what they do best to our best friends, and I hope more wellness innovators follow suit.
