On October 1, 2020, the Public Health Agency of Canada alerted consumers to a deadly outbreak of Salmonella infections in British Columbia, Alberta, and Yukon. The investigation identified pig ear dog treats as the likely source, particularly Paws Up! and Western Family brands. These brands are sold at Canadian Tire and Save-On-Foods. Investigation Summary

As of September 29, 2020, eight confirmed cases of Salmonella typhimurium…

  • As of September 29, 2020, eight confirmed cases of Salmonella typhimurium illness were reported: British Columbia (5), Alberta (2), and Yukon (1).
  • Illnesses occurred between late February and early August 2020.
  • Three individuals were hospitalized, and one died.
  • Affected individuals were between 7 and 95 years old, with an equal distribution among men and women. Actions Taken
  • On September 29, 2020, Masters Best Friend issued a voluntary Notice of Stop Sale for the affected products sold nationwide in Canada.
  • Consumers are advised not to feed their dogs any Paws Up! or Western Family brand pig ear dog treats and to dispose of any remaining treats. Safety Reminder
