Tariff News for Pet Parents

Although the tariffs are supposed to bolster American industries, there will likely be secondary consequences in the animal healthcare world. Most veterinary practices import goods and supplies from overseas (China, Mexico, and Canada, for example). The goods include pharmaceuticals, ingredients in pharmaceuticals for pets, and medical supplies.

Veterinary hospitals, clinics, and practices depend on medications and equipment for quality patient care. A disruption in trade channels will likely lead to increased costs, shortages, and challenges in everyday operations.

“It’s important to understand that tariffs apply at the point of import – no matter if you buy from a U.S. distributor, the added cost from tariffs will trickle down,” according to the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association (GVMA).

Further, GVMA indicates that Drug shortages in companion animal medicine can be particularly troublesome.

Pet Parents Worry About Increasing Pet Care Costs

It’s easier said than done, but stay as calm as possible in the face of rising pet care costs. Having a plan of action and budgeted costs in place is the first step to combating the effects of tariffs.

According to Rover’s 2025 True Cost of Pet Parenthood Report for dogs and cats, 69 percent of pet parents report that pet food and treats take up most of their budget. However, at least 33 percent of pet parents reduced spending in other areas of their lives, like groceries or fun activities, to ensure their pets get what they need.

At least 68 percent of pet parents rely on looking for similar-quality products and services when financial times are tough.

As more people return to the office, their budgets are spread thinner due to pet sitting or daycare costs. Some millennials postpone having human kids to provide more disposable income for their pets.

In what is being dubbed a “petcession” by media outlets like Business Insider, the effects of rising pet care costs have not gone unnoticed by pet care companies. Although the “petcession” has not hit yet, it’s a good idea for pet parents to plan now for the inevitability due to tariff news and rising costs.

Budgeting for Pet Care

“Avid pet lovers won’t be affected,” one dog dad told WRTV. “It’s like having children–he’s my third kid.”

The American Pet Products Association (APPA) reports that $152 billion was spent on pets in 2024, indicating pet parents want the very best for their cats, dogs, fish, parrots, and other pets.

Here are specific steps every pet parent may consider in the face of tariff news, rising costs, and to diminish any worries:

Consider a High-Quality, Less-Expensive Pet Food

If you decide to save money by purchasing more affordable food, do so cautiously. If the food is switched too soon, it may disagree with your pet’s tummy. For example, switching dog food gradually will prevent diarrhea or other digestive issues.

Plan for Veterinary Visits and Unexpected Pet Emergencies

Create a dedicated savings plan for emergencies, and allocate a portion of your income to regular pet care. A feasible goal is based on your budget. However, no skip important veterinary visits, as there is no substitute for blood work and hands-on examinations.

Consider Pet Insurance

Pet insurance has pros and cons, but understanding the coverage and provider benefits takes any guesswork out of the process. In Petful’s article “Is Pet Insurance Worth It,” we discuss the benefits and drawbacks of making the decision.

Buy in Bulk

When possible, visit a box chain to stock up on treats, poop bags, litter, and supplies when they are on sale. If you and a pet-loving friend or family member purchase a box-chain membership, this can help defer the costs.

Track Current Expenses

Instead of impulse buying, list all your monthly and annual costs in a journal or spreadsheet. This should include things like veterinary visits, food, grooming, medications/supplements, toys, supplies, etc. You can determine if overspending is an issue by looking at where your money is being spent.

Consider Auto-Ship for Discounts

Many online retailers offer an auto-ship discount on food, medications, treats, and more. This gives you peace of mind knowing you’ll never run out of your pet’s supplies, plus a bonus discount.

Talk to Your Veterinarian About Generic Medications

If your pet has ongoing medical concerns that require medications, ask your veterinarian if lower-cost, generic versions are available.
