Lost Cat Survived 3 Weeks Hiding In Strange Location
How is it possible a lost cat survived three weeks with no food and water? Her family says it's the power of love.

Cats are known to be curious, independent, agile, nocturnal, and resilient, which may help explain how one lost cat survived three weeks on its own. If there’s any wonder that cats can endure challenging situations and adapt to survive, Sunny-Loo is a perfect example.
While packing up to move from Washington State to Colorado, the Hanson family realized their cat had gone missing.
“Poor Sunny, she got scared, and in the past when she’s scared, she runs and hides,” dad Andy Hanson shared. “We bought a little carrier for her so she can come on the airplane with us and everything ... and then we didn’t know where she was.”

Long Lost Cat Survived: Stows Away In Unusual Location
The Hanson family was devastated. They looked everywhere for poor little Sunny-Loo, but she was nowhere to be found. They checked with movers who put their furniture in storage. Sadly, days went by with no sign of the beloved family cat.
“It was hard on my heart, and I was really sad,” 12-year-old Hannah Hanson stated.
Friends and family members continued the search while the brokenhearted family departed Washington for Colorado.
The movers arrived with the family’s furniture, and that’s when Sunny-Loo made her presence known. The children sat on the couch, surprised to hear a meow sound coming from beneath.
Andy pulled the sofa out in time to see Sunny-Loo peeking through a small area. The cat was very weak and emaciated but alive.
Veterinary Intervention: Lost Cat’s Road to Recovery
No one can explain how the cat survived alone with no food or water for three long weeks. Emergency veterinarian Dr. Erin Dixon admitted shock and disbelief.
“I kept trying to confirm everything, that it was three weeks, not three days,” Dr. Dixon said.
Sunny-Loo spent three days in intensive care and bounced back to good health in a remarkably fast amount of time. The Hansons believe the power of love saved their family cat.
“Not only do we love her, but we can sense that she loves us too. I feel that she fought to stay alive for us and that God knew we needed her as well,” mom Kristen Hanson reported.
The fact that their lost cat survived three weeks without food or water isn't something the Hanson family ever imagined would happen to them, but that's the beauty of miracles.
How to Keep Cats Safe In Stressful Times
Cats like to seek seclusion and hide during stressful times. Be sure your residence has accessible, safe hiding places for your cat. Close doors and block off areas you don’t want your pets to access. Here are some other tips for keeping cats safe during stressful situations:
Utilize Calming Aids
Calming products for cats that contain natural pheromones are very helpful. Calming pheromones can help reduce anxiety and help cats feel calmer. Calming or soothing music gives a cat a sense of security and peace.
Keep Identification Tags and Microchips Up to Date
Be sure your cat’s identification tag contains the most current information. Microchips need to be updated if you move or change cell numbers.
Maintain Routine and Consistency
Cats, like many pets, thrive on routine. Cats get stressed when a routine is disrupted and may hide, run, or become ill. Gradually introduce new situations, such as a new baby, a new couch, etc. Allow cats to have a place to retreat, as this can be a lifesaver.
Provide Mental and Physical Stimulation
Not only do cats need physical attention and play, but offering mentally stimulating toys and games is beneficial, too. Puzzle feeders and scratching posts prevent boredom-induced stress.
Prepare for Travel or Moves in Advance
Know where your cat is at all times. The Hanson family is very loving, but they were unaware of their cat’s location while packing. Fortunately, their story has a happy ending. Sunny-Loo the long lost cat survived by a miracle, but this isn't usually the case.
If moving or traveling, acclimate your cat to a carrier, know their whereabouts, and talk to your veterinarian about calming agents during travel if needed.
Limit Exposure to Stressful Triggers
Provide your cat with a quiet space if it’s a holiday, celebration, or other busy time. This feline retreat can help them feel secure and less affected by the hustle and bustle.
