Homemade Dog Food Recipe: First Time Using Carob
I’ve been looking forward to trying this homemade dog food recipe because I’ve never used carob powder before. To the best of my knowledge, my dog, Banjo, hadn’t tasted carob either.
However, Banjo was immediately intrigued by the carob powder:
- She couldn’t keep her snout away from the bag I brought home.
- She followed me around the entire time I whipped up these quick biscuits.

Homemade Dog Food: Wheat- and Gluten-Free Carob Biscuits Recipe
This homemade dog food recipe is perfect for dogs with wheat or gluten sensitivities. The carob, a safe chocolate alternative, makes these treats delicious and healthy for your furry friend. Here’s how to make wheat- and gluten-free carob dog biscuits:
Ingredients
- 1 cup white rice flour (feel free to try other flours based on your dog’s allergies or preferences)
- ½ cup carob powder
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¾ cup water
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together until a smooth dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water.
- Roll the dough out onto a heavily floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness. Use a small cookie cutter to cut out biscuit shapes.
- Place the biscuits on a nonstick cookie sheet.
- Bake for 10–15 minutes or until the biscuits start to crackle.
- Allow them to cool on a wire rack before serving. Store extra biscuits in the refrigerator.

Adjustments to the Homemade Dog Food Recipe
Not wanting to overdo my dog treat supplies, I cut the recipe in half, which resulted in about 2 dozen cookies. I also used brown rice flour instead of white rice flour, and it worked perfectly as a substitute.
Here are a few tips from my experience:
- The dough was extremely soft, so I recommend rolling it out slowly and gently to avoid tearing.
- The finished biscuits were crunchy little delights, and Banjo seemed to thoroughly enjoy them.
For a unique twist on homemade treats, try these carrot and almond butter dog treats that are both nutritious and easy to make.

I admit I didn’t try any myself, but it looks as though Banjo is a fan of carob dog biscuits. Maybe I’ll have to find a human treat recipe to try it out for myself.
