Small dogs with red coats make a big impression. A ruby Cavalier, a fiery Miniature Pinscher, or an apricot Poodle stands out on every walk, and owners naturally want that color to stay rich and glossy.

We previously reviewed Nature's Protection Superior Care Red Coat Salmon & Krill, the all-breeds version of this line. This time we're looking at the formula built specifically for small and mini breeds: a salmon-protein recipe in a small-breed kibble, labeled for all life stages. We tested it at home with Teddy, our 4-year-old Miniature Poodle.

Nature's Protection Superior Care Red Coat Small & Mini Breeds Salmon review: quick verdict

Nature's Protection Superior Care Red Coat Small & Mini Breeds Salmon is a well-designed complete food for little red- and brown-coated dogs. Salmon is the featured protein, the bag highlights that 75% of the protein comes from animal origin, and krill meal and salmon oil add marine omega fatty acids. The U.S. label covers all life stages for small breeds, so one bag can take a small dog from puppyhood into adulthood.

Its signature RCE (Red Coat Enhancer) complex supplies L-tyrosine, L-cysteine, and L-tryptophan, amino acids involved in normal hair and pigment production. For small-dog households looking for coat-focused nutrition in a small-breed format, it's an appealing option, with individual results expected to vary.

How is this different from the all-breeds Red Coat Salmon & Krill?

Our earlier Red Coat Salmon & Krill review covered the 8.8-pound all-breeds bag, which is labeled for every size, including large-breed growth. This small and mini breed formula is aimed squarely at little dogs. It comes in a 3.3 lb bag, uses a small-breed kibble, and its AAFCO statement covers all life stages except growth of large-size dogs. The bag also calls out hydrolyzed salmon protein and a feeding table for puppies up to 12 months as well as adults.

Which dogs is this food made for?

It's made for healthy small and mini breed dogs with red, ginger, copper, or brown coats, from puppies to adults. Think ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Miniature Pinschers, Norfolk and Norwich Terriers, red Pomeranians, red Dachshunds, and red or apricot Poodles like Teddy.

Any healthy small dog can enjoy it, since the omega fatty acids support skin and coat health whatever the color. It's not designed for large-breed puppies.

Why do red coats fade?

Red, ginger, and cream fur gets its color from a pigment called pheomelanin. The body makes it from the amino acid tyrosine, and the sulfur-containing amino acid cysteine is built into the pigment itself. That's why tyrosine and cysteine are part of the RCE complex.

Diet is one piece of the picture. Sun exposure, normal coat cycles, grooming products, and age also affect how vivid a red coat looks. A sudden color change, thinning fur, or itchy skin is worth a vet visit, because thyroid problems, allergies, and skin infections can all change a coat.

What is in Nature's Protection Red Coat Small & Mini Breeds Salmon?

Nature's Protection Superior Care is made in Lithuania and sold in the U.S. by Kika USA.

Kika's product page lists: hydrolyzed salmon protein, dried potato, peas, sweet potato, poultry fat, krill meal, dried plain beet pulp, salmon oil, monocalcium phosphate, sodium aluminosilicate, flaxseed, fructooligosaccharide, yucca schidigera extract, dried cranberries, pot marigold, vitamins, minerals, L-tyrosine, L-cysteine, L-tryptophan, mixed tocopherols (a preservative), and rosemary extract.

The protein: salmon first

Salmon leads the recipe, and the bag highlights hydrolyzed salmon protein and states that 75% of the protein comes from animal origin. Krill meal adds a second marine ingredient, which Kika describes as a 100% sustainable Antarctic source of omega-3 and choline. The recipe also contains poultry fat, so owners managing a confirmed poultry or fish allergy can review the panel with their vet.

The coat nutrients

Salmon oil, krill meal, and flaxseed supply omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that support skin and coat shine. Zinc, copper, and biotin round out the coat-related nutrients.

The RCE complex combines L-tyrosine, L-cysteine, and L-tryptophan, which Kika says help maintain rich, vibrant coat color. Petful presents that benefit as brand-reported, while recognizing that these amino acids give the formula a clear, relevant nutrient story.

Digestion and gut health

Beet pulp and fructooligosaccharides are fermentable fibers that can support stool quality and gut health, and the bag highlights high digestibility and gut health. Cranberries, pot marigold, and yucca extract round out the botanicals.

MicroZeoGen

MicroZeoGen is Kika's name for a volcanic clinoptilolite mineral, listed on the U.S. page as sodium aluminosilicate. Kika positions it as part of the formula's detox, nutrient-absorption, and tear-stain story. Petful presents those benefits as brand-reported rather than guaranteed for every dog.

Grain-free or not?

Kika's page describes the recipe as grain-free, and the bag front says "no added wheat." If you'd like to discuss grain-free feeding, the FDA has received reports of non-hereditary dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs eating both grain-free and grain-containing diets, has not established a single cause, and encourages owners to talk with a veterinarian about diet changes.

Our experience

Teddy is our 4-year-old Miniature Poodle, with the warm red-apricot curls this formula is made for.

First impressions. The kibble is small and dark, an easy size for a Miniature Poodle's mouth. Teddy was curious from the moment the bag came out, and he gave his first bowl his full attention.

What to expect. Kika says owners may see a shinier coat in 1 to 2 weeks and improved digestion in 1 to 2 weeks, with tear-stain changes over 6 to 9 weeks. Because visible coat changes follow the normal hair cycle, steady feeding and observation over several weeks give the clearest picture.

Price and where to buy

The 3.3 lb bag costs $23.99 on Kika USA's site, or roughly $7.27 per pound. Subscribe & Save takes 35% off the first delivery ($15.59), then 25% off later deliveries ($17.99), with delivery every 2 to 12 weeks and the option to cancel anytime. Kika also advertises a free gift with a first subscription and loyalty points on purchases.

Kika lists expected delivery in 3 to 5 business days, and orders over $70 ship free. Because offers can change, check the product page and your cart for current pricing.

How much should I feed a small-breed puppy or adult?

The bag includes feeding tables for puppies up to 12 months and for adults. Kika recommends serving the food dry with fresh water always available, feeding puppies about 2 to 2.5 times the adult active amount for their weight, and free-choice feeding for pregnant or nursing females.

Introduce the new food gradually, mixing it into your dog's current food and increasing the share over about a week. Watch appetite and stool quality, and check with your vet if vomiting or persistent diarrhea develops.

Final Petful verdict

Nature's Protection Superior Care Red Coat Small & Mini Breeds Salmon brings the Red Coat line's coat-focused approach to a format made for little dogs. Salmon protein leads, krill meal and salmon oil add marine omega fatty acids, the RCE amino acids are on the label, and the AAFCO statement covers small dogs from puppyhood on.

Petful considers it a promising everyday option for a healthy small red- or brown-coated dog that tolerates salmon, poultry fat, and the full ingredient panel. Kika's positioning around MicroZeoGen, tear stains, and coat color adds to the product story, with individual results expected to vary. For the right small dog, it's well worth a try.
