Why was it recalled?

FDA collected and tested product samples. The Northwest Naturals recall followed positive results: the 2 lb Frozen Chicken Recipe tested positive for Salmonella, and the 6 lb Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe tested positive for both Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella. No illnesses had been reported at the time of the announcement.

What Northwest Naturals is recalling

Northwest Naturals of Portland, Oregon announced the Northwest Naturals recall on August 28, 2026. It covers 53 cases (1,272 pounds) of Frozen Chicken Recipe, sold as a cat food and as a protein topper for dogs in 2 lb bags, and 19 cases (684 pounds) of Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe in 6 lb bags.

Both products are frozen raw diets and were distributed to retail stores nationwide.

How the contamination was found

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration collected and tested samples of the two products. The 2 lb Frozen Chicken Recipe tested positive for Salmonella. The 6 lb Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella. No illnesses had been reported in connection with the recall as of the announcement.

Salmonella and Listeria: risk to pets and people

Pets infected with Salmonella or Listeria monocytogenes may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets show only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected pets that look healthy can still carry the bacteria and pass them to other animals or people.

People can get sick from handling contaminated raw pet food, especially without thorough hand washing. Salmonella symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping and fever. Listeria infection is rarer but more dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, adults 65 and older and people with weakened immune systems; in pregnancy it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or premature delivery.

What should you do?

    Stop feeding Frozen Chicken Recipe (2 lb, Lot B-5) or Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe (6 lb, Lot B-19) to your pets.

    Wash your hands with soap and water after handling the product, and clean and sanitize bowls, utensils, surfaces and freezer space it touched.

    Watch pets for lethargy, diarrhea (possibly bloody), fever, vomiting or reduced appetite, and call your veterinarian if these appear.
