According to the announcement on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, the problem — potential salmonella contamination — was discovered during routine testing. The bacteria can sicken both pets and humans.

The affected product was distributed nationwide. If you have the product listed above, with the specific lot code AND "best by" date, do not feed it to your pet. Seek a refund from your place of purchase. "Natural Balance Pet Foods products are 100% guaranteed, and all returned product will be refunded," the company says.

Green Pea & Chicken Formula is described on the Natural Balance website as an "ultra premium grain-free cat food" designed for cats needing alternative ingredients to support healthy digestion. The company boasts that it is a "pioneer in the limited ingredient category."

Before this, the most recent recall for Natural Balance

was about a year ago, when some canned cat food was found to have elevated levels of choline chloride.
