The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an advisory regarding specific lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products after testing confirmed contamination with E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella. These pathogens pose serious risks to both pets and humans through handling or exposure. The affected product details are as follows:

  • Product: Darwin’s Natural Pet Products BioLogics All-Natural & Grain-Free Beef Recipe for Dogs (raw frozen, 2-lb packages), Darwin’s Natural Pet Products BioLogics All-Natural & Grain-Free Chicken Recipe for Dogs (raw frozen, 2-lb packages), Darwin’s Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Duck Recipe for Dogs (raw frozen, 2-lb packages)
  • Lot Numbers: Beef Recipe – Lot 10662 (MFG Date: May 30, 2024), Chicken Recipe – Lot 10683 (MFG Date: Jun 05, 2024), Duck Recipe – Lot 10638 (MFG Date: May 22, 2024)
  • Packaging: 2-pound white and clear plastic packages with four separate half-pound units. Beef and Chicken BioLogics products feature orange labeling; Duck Natural Selections features blue labeling. Lot codes are printed on the front lower left unit of each package.
  • Distribution: Sold online through Darwin’s subscription service and shipped directly to consumers across the United States.

What should you do?

Pet owners are urged to check their packaging for Darwin’s Natural Pet Products with the following lot numbers: Beef Recipe – Lot 10662 (MFG Date: May 30, 2024)

  • Chicken Recipe – Lot 10683 (MFG Date: Jun 05, 2024) Duck Recipe – Lot 10638 (MFG Date: May 22, 2024) If you have these products: Stop feeding them to your pets immediately.
  • Safely discard the food in a secure container where other animals, including wildlife, cannot access it. Do not donate the product.
  • Clean and disinfect all pet bowls, utensils, food storage containers, preparation surfaces, bedding, litter boxes, toys, and any surfaces the food or your pet may have touched.
  • Thoroughly wash your hands after handling the product or cleaning contaminated surfaces. Health Risks:
  • Pets infected with E. coli O157:H7 or Salmonella may experience diarrhea (sometimes bloody), vomiting, fever, urinary tract infections, loss of appetite, or lethargy. Infected pets can shed these bacteria in their feces even if they do not appear sick.
  • Humans exposed to E. coli O157:H7 can develop severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), nausea, or vomiting. Some cases may progress to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious kidney complication. Salmonella exposure in humans can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps; severe cases may require hospitalization.
  • Children under 5, older adults, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals are at higher risk for serious illness.
