Couple Rescues Over 2,500 Homeless Pugs So Far

Homeless Pugs have friends in a South African couple who devote their lives to rescue and sanctuary. They hope to inspire others.

When Cheryl Gaw decided to open her heart and home to homeless Pugs, she had zero plans to save over 2,500 of the popular breed.

It was “never part of the plan,” the 63-year-old retiree told CNN. “Of course, the Pugs won.”

Gaw’s passion for the breed began in 2008 when her husband, Malcolm, gifted her one. During a Pug Club meetup in their town, someone asked the couple if they could temporarily foster a few dogs. What started as a gift turned into a legacy and beyond.

How Homeless Pugs Find Forever Homes

In the first year as foster parents, Cheryl and Malcolm provided temporary shelter to 60 dogs, with 19 Pugs living under their room at one time. They knew if their volunteerism were to continue, they needed more space.

The Gaws sold their home, lived in a trailer for a short time, and eventually established the Pug Rescue South Africa in Johannesburg in 2010. At present, 200 Pugs call the center their home. The couple has helped homeless Pugs who were sick, abandoned, or given up by owners due to financial hardship.

A sense of humor and a heart of gold are paramount for the couple. Cheryl calls the Pug “clowns of the dog world” who make her laugh. She says the Pugs are always in her space, and they are very loving. She gave up trying to live hair-free, as they do shed.

Daily Challenges and Operations

They can’t do it alone, so the rescue center’s staff plays an important role. The day begins at 5:15 a.m. The dogs awaken from their cottages, sleeping in a group arrangement. They are housed together based on age and personality, so everyone gets along.

Breakfast is fed, medications are dispensed, and that kicks off the fun: bathtime, playtime, and grooming time, followed by midday snacks and a rest. Once afternoon breaks and naptime are over, it’s time for more playing and evening meals. With full bellies, evening medications, and plenty of cuddles and snuggles, the Pugs head back to their cottages between 6 and 7 p.m.

Skirmishes occur from time to time, which is to be expected. Finances are always a concern, as yearly veterinary bills topple $40,000. Outside of rescuing, rehabilitation, and rehoming them, there are always incoming dogs. “The operation doesn’t stop,” Gaw shares.

Caring for a Pug

Gaw admits that the breed is brachycephalic (short muzzles), so they tend to have breathing and other health problems. She and her staff deal with eye issues and ear infections regularly. Since many pet parents cannot afford veterinary bills, they relinquish ownership of their Pugs.

Caring for a Pug isn’t easy, but like all things in life, it can be done with a plan and resources. In her article on Pugs and Brachycephalic Syndrome, Dr. Pippa Elliott says common symptoms of the breed include: Noisy breathing Exercise intolerance Snoring Heat sensitivity

However, the American Kennel Club ranks Pugs among the most registered dogs. Pugs need daily walks or playtime to keep in shape. They are foodies, so be sure not to overfeed them.

Some things to pay attention to when owning a Pug include: Breathing issues Dental health Weight management Eye protection and examinations Care for skin folds Bone and joint health Snoring and sleep issues Social and emotional needs Proper diet Love and attention

Pro Tip: Use a harness instead of a collar to prevent pressure on a Pug’s delicate airway.

How to Get Involved with Pug Rescue

Make a simple action plan if the Gaws inspire you to get involved with homeless Pugs and Pug rescue. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I have the time and resources to care for a Pug?
  • If I can’t afford a Pug, what ways can I volunteer? Is transporting dogs in need an option?
  • Do I have the time and resources to foster homeless Pugs?
  • Can I help with home screenings of potential adopters?
  • Which organizations can I donate to one time or ongoing?
  • Are there any events or meetups happening in my area I can attend?
  • Can I sponsor a Pug (call a rescue and ask)?

If you want to adopt a Pug or get involved, start with a Pug rescue organization. Visit local Pug rescues, search online for available Pugs in your area, and consider attending adoption events.

Those who can’t commit to a dog full-time should consider fostering. Most Pug rescues cover veterinary costs, and you give the dog a temporary, loving home. Dog lovers who want to make a difference but cannot commit to a permanent option find fostering appealing. Homeless Pugs are waiting to be your best friend!
