Nunn Milling Company was founded in 1926 in Indiana. Initially, the company sold flour and corn meal, and in the 1940s it started making small batches of dog and cat food. The pet food sales ended up being greater than the flour and corn meal sales, and the company added additional feed to its brand lines.

Today, the company manufactures dog and cat food, dog and cat treats, and bird feed in addition to flour and corn meal production. The company is 4th-generation family-owned and privately held.

Yes, there has been a Nunn Better recall. In January 2021, certain packages of Nunn Better Maintenance Dog Food were included in an expanded recall of corn-based dry pet foods produced by Midwestern Pet Foods. The U.S. Food and Safety Administration (FDA) said at least 70 dogs had died of apparent aflatoxin poisoning after being fed a brand called Sportmix. Packages of Nunn Better and a couple other brands were produced at the same plant in Oklahoma and were also recalled out of an abundance of caution.

January 2021

Cause: Aflatoxin. Announcement: FDA alert dated Jan. 11, 2021 . What was recalled: Nunn Better Maintenance, 50 lb. bags, with a “05” in the date/lot code AND an expiration date of July 9, 2022 or earlier.

In addition to Nunn Better, other affected products included certain packages of Sportmix, Pro Pac and Splash Fat Cat.
