Milo's Kitchen Company Overview

Milo’s Kitchen produces dog treats that include jerky, strips and meatballs. The division was previously under Natural Balance, which merged with Del Monte in 2013 and was later associated with Big Heart Pet Brands. The J.M. Smucker Company acquired the brand in 2015.

The brand has worked to distance itself from the years-long jerky treat crisis that left more than 1,000 pets dead — proclaiming in 2014 that a revamped Milo's Kitchen no longer sources any ingredients from China, and that its treats "are proudly made in the USA with 100% U.S.-sourced chicken, beef, duck and sweet potato as the No. 1 ingredient."

Has There Ever Been a Milo’s Kitchen Recall?

Yes, there was a Milo's Kitchen recall in spring 2018, specifically involving a few selections of Milo's Kitchen dog treats due to the concern of heightened beef thyroid hormone levels. The FDA has indicated that pets consuming food or treats with thyroid hormones might develop hyperthyroidism, an illness uncommon in dogs and often linked to thyroid cancer. The J.M. Smucker Company announced that this particular Milo's Kitchen recall was confined to two particular varieties, including their production dates and package sizes.

In a separate instance prior to this, back in 2013, another Milo's Kitchen recall was initiated, together with Nestlé Purina PetCare's Waggin' Train, due to the detection of antibiotic residues not sanctioned by the FDA for use within the USA. The following year saw the reintroduction of these treats in stores, featuring a revised recipe.

Geoff Tanner, the vice president of pet snacks at Milo's Kitchen, emphasized to DVM360 in February 2014 that their treats undergo rigorous quality checks at every stage and are overseen by an exhaustive food safety program aimed at averting potential quality issues before they arise.

Nonetheless, Dr. Jennifer Larsen, a veterinary nutritionist, expressed skepticism regarding the safety of even those jerky treats labeled as Made in USA, writing on the Veterinary Information Network (VIN) in the summer of 2014: "Until we have a more comprehensive understanding of this issue and can deem any treat safe, I will persist in advising against the use of jerky treats, regardless of their origin."

Below are the comprehensive details of all instances involving a Milo's Kitchen recall.
