Dogs respond best when the environment is calm, and you are patient. Halo’s training program was developed with insights from professional celebrity dog trainer, Cesar Milan, so the system focuses on calm guidance. Begin in a distraction-free, small space where your dog can understand and focus on you. Build confidence as you work through the collar’s cues before moving on to larger outdoor boundaries and travel setups.

Of note: We did not use outdoor boundaries, as we are saving that feature for travel in the coming months. However, I know pet parents who own the Halo Collar and expressed how easy it was to train their dogs to understand the cues.

It is essential to create a proper fit for both performance and comfort. The collar must be situated high on your dog’s neck, so the contact points are touching their coat properly. It took me about 10 minutes to follow the instructions so Sir Alvin had a comfortable fit.

The indoor “keep away” zones are especially helpful during boundary reinforcement near stairs, doors, hotel room entryways, and more. Dogs who understand the core concept of “this space is safe” before you increase to bigger ones will do better. Consistency and positive reinforcement are key.

Any GPS collar works best as a training tool, but it is not a substitute for general training. I view the Halo Collar 5 as a training partner, but it doesn’t replace the work I do one-on-one with my dog.

My Experience With the Halo Pet Tracking Collar

Right out of the box, the Halo Collar 5 is impressive, as it comes with everything needed to get started right away. It works in tandem with the free, concise, and user-friendly Halo app. It took about an hour to charge the first time, and I was able to easily create an outdoor perimeter.

We live in a suburban area where one section has reliable wi-fi, but a heavily wooded state park is a half hour away. The collar’s GPS reliability was strong in open areas and performed well near trees and buildings. There were a few spotty areas at the state park, but we never lost signal. I charged the battery every two days, so the 48 hours of charge time held true for us.

The collar didn’t irritate his skin; it stayed in place and performed well during daily use. On a particularly rainy day, my little explorer got muddy. Using a warm cloth and dish soap, I wiped the collar free of dirt stains with ease.
