A hero dog is being lauded as a lifesaver for his efforts in helping reunite a frantic Arizona family with their lost child. No family should ever have to face the devastation of a missing child, but thankfully, a brave pup stepped up to save the day.

Little Boden Allen wandered from his home in Seligman, Arizona, unbeknownst to his family. When the toddler was nowhere to be found, the family contacted the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. Immediately, a 40-person team of searchers took to the area to find the tot.

In their wildest dreams, they could not have imagined it would be a hero of the canine variety to save the day. Here’s what happened, how the dog found the child, and what he did for seven miles to get him home.

How the Hero Dog Got Involved

“There were a thousand ways for that to go really, really bad and one good way and luckily it turned out to be the good way," Scotty Dunton of Dunton Ranch told local media.

Dunton owns a local ranch he shares with an Anatolian Pyrenees dog, which is protective and guardian by nature. Dunton reports that his dog typically patrols the ranch at night for about a half mile, making “big loops” before returning home. In doing so, the dog keeps coyotes away from the rancher’s animals.

Dunton watched reports that a child was missing, but he never expected the tot would wander onto his property. But his dog, Buford, was ready to help. It is believed the hero dog found Boden beneath a tree somewhere in the vicinity of his ranch.

Taking Charge of a Scary Situation

Despite the sheriff’s office and volunteers searching all night for young Boden, they made no progress. According to Dunton, the child was surrounded by big canyons, ridges, and a lot of country. He was amazed to learn the boy traversed the land as far and wide as he did. The area contains bears, coyotes, snakes, and mountain lions.

“Not only did we search on foot, but also, there were some of the razors and 4x4s," YCSO public information officer Megan Fitzgerald reported. "We did make use of some of the helicopters to make sure we were doing everything we could to locate the child.”

Around 7:30 in the morning, around 16 hours after first disappearing, little Boden came sauntering up the road near Dunton’s home. The hero dog was right by the child’s side.

It is estimated that Buford led the child at least seven miles to safety. Despite being shook up and scared, the tot was happily reunited with his family.

Dunton told the child he was the toughest little two-year-old he had ever seen, to which Boden replied, “Yep!”

What is an Anatolian Pyrenees Dog?

This large, powerful dog breed hails from Turkey. They were originally bred to work independently and protect flocks like sheep. They enjoy watching over their pack and property and are often found on farms and ranches. The Anatolian Pyrenees Dog is a mixed breed resulting from crossing an Anatolian Shepherd with a Great Pyrenees.

Early training and socialization are necessary, and the breed does best with experienced owners who understand their purpose. An Anatolian Pyrenees Dog is not ideal for a city dweller with a small apartment.

In the case of the missing toddler, this dog used his instincts to stay with the missing toddler and guide him to safety, showcasing exactly why these dogs are trusted protectors.

Honoring Hero Dogs

Not every dog will lead a lost child out of the wilderness, and not every pooch will have their story shared across headlines or be called a hero on social media. But if you’re lucky enough to share your life with a dog, you already know that heroism comes in many forms, such as: Dogs sense our emotions They teach us to be present in the moment Dogs provide love, routine, and consistency They support our emotional health and well-being

Some real-life examples of everyday dogs doing extraordinary things include:

  • A quick-thinking Doberman Pinscher who saved his grandpa’s life.
  • Many amazing dogs sniff out cancer in human beings.
  • Military and police dogs who remain heroes after retirement.

Is Your Dog an Everyday Hero?

Look at the dog sitting near you on the couch or near your feet. Those dogs may have everyday heroic qualities.

These loyal canines may sense when something’s off, position themselves between you and a perceived threat, or alert you to noises or changes around the home. While not aggressive, these dogs are watchful, calm under pressure, and devoted to keeping their pack of humans safe.

Emotional awareness is another sign of a heroic dog. Some dogs have a fantastic ability to read human emotions and respond with gentle presence and support.

If your dog seems to know when you’re feeling down, such as nudging you with their nose, sitting quietly at your side, or even mirroring your energy, they may demonstrate emotional attunement.

This sort of empathy is a key trait among therapy and service dogs, and it’s a form of heroism that brings daily comfort to people dealing with grief, anxiety, or stress.

One thing is for sure when it comes to dogs: whether they serve as service animals, are curled up as couch potatoes, or are the heroes in our hearts, there is no bond of love like that a dog provides. May we always be the people they know we are.
