Author’s Note: The following content was sponsored by Joe Pup. I received a free box in order to review the service, though the opinions are my own.
Subscription boxes have become a huge trend over the past few years. And I won’t lie — I’ve signed up for my fair share.
From monthly makeup collections to weekly meal plans and even razor blades, I’ve tried out quite a few box subscriptions. Considering that everything under the sun is available for recurring deliveries, it’s no surprise that our pets can also benefit.
Recently I had the opportunity to test out Joe Pup. Although this family-run business offers affordable, monthly subscription boxes for dogs, I was able to share the Birthday Blowout Deluxe box with my Banjo — a one-time special treat for pups celebrating birthdays, adoptaversaries and “gotcha” days.
Inside Banjo’s Birthday Box
Banjo knew right away that this shipment was meant for her — and boy did her instincts pay off. Inside we found a colorful array of toys:
- A set of 3 squeaking tennis balls
- A birthday cake that sang “Happy Birthday”
- A pink, honking dragon
- A squeaking ice cream cone
There was a huge variety of treats:
- Happy Birthday bakery bone
- Peanut butter training treats
- 3 types of chews
- Jerky bites
- Grain-free biscuits
- Birthday dog biscuits
- Coconut treats
On top of the toys and edibles, we also found a great reusable shopping bag and, as a thoughtful touch, a personalized birthday card for Banjo stuffed with coupons and balloons.
Banjo’s Initial Response
Possibly the most frustrating moment in Banjo’s life was when I made her back away from the birthday box cornucopia so I could take a picture of all the goodies. But, like the good girl that she is, Banjo waited (and drooled copiously) until it was her turn to dive into all the new toys and treats.
We started with the toys. Banjo isn’t one to turn her nose at any toy and is downright aghast when I throw away one of her plush toys that she’s eviscerated. So, naturally, she was excited about all the choices.
The balls were a smash hit. Although they squeak, they’re pretty quiet and Banjo didn’t gnaw on them endlessly. Instead, she carried the balls around the house and, one-by-one, knocked them under the couch — which is where all balls go, she’s convinced.
The ice cream cone and dragon were fun for her to romp around with and toss. But the birthday cake really drew her attention. Banjo has never had a toy that offered such a complex sound. Typically it’s just squeaks or honks. The “Happy Birthday” song both fascinated and concerned her, so she spent the afternoon carrying the cake around the house and whining as it crooned to her.
Wanting to give Banjo the opportunity to select her own favorite treat, I spread the loose biscuits out on the floor and invited her to select her favorite. They were all apparently her favorite because she gobbled them up from left to right, leaving barely a trace. She seemed particularly drawn to the jerky, though.
The fun didn’t stop with singing toys and a buffet of delicious morsels.
Banjo had never seen a balloon before, so you better believe I inflated all 5 and had a blast watching her chase them all around the living room. After the fun was over, though, I made sure I put them well out of her reach, just to be safe.
