Stopping Cats from Drinking Christmas Tree Water! (11 replies)
It's that time of year again and I'd like to be proactive in stopping our felines from drinking up all the Christmas tree water! Does anyone know of a natural additive to add to the water that will deter cats from drinking the water while not harming the tree? It's really really frustrating to have to refill the water over and over again, while the cat water bowl sits filled to the brim in the next room!!
Oooo I feel for you Karen, lol. I only have one cat so when he drinks from that water it's not too horrible. I gave up years ago! One thing that did occur to me is for you to either try buying a different tree stand or to wrap something around the base of the tree. Remember how in Charlie Brown they use Linus's blanket around that really "special" tree that Charlie Brown finds? Kind of like that.
I have a tree stand that I LOVE. It might work for you. Basically, it has a top that snaps shut snug to the tree. This makes it way easier to stand the tree up because you're not trying to hold it steady and straight while you turn those keys but it also is pretty snug so could prevent water thievery. I will have to go digging to get it and see if I can get a good picture!
Hillary is forever curious about Christmas tree water. She tries to get to it, but fortunately our tree stand prevents that little cat face from sipping the wet stuff. I didn't really think about it when I bought the stand, which predates Hillary, but I'm glad it has a little guard that (intentional or not) doesn't allow her access.
Still googling...MWAHAHAHAHA feline friends! Found some possibilities, but it may be too late to order so it arrives in time for putting up this year's tree. We shall see, but at least I'm armed and ready for next year at the very least. Melissa and Dave-do either of you happen to know the brand of your tree stand?
Hey Karen! Okay, so here is the stand that I have:
It's kind of pricey, but if you are an Amazon Prime member, you can get free two-day shipping.
I love this stand because setting the tree in place is wicked easy, no more twisty knobs! Also, when the tree is in place, all of those black things are snapped down, which makes it hard for an animal to get their head in there. The water part is actually fairly deep too, so you can fill it less making it less likely anyone who is determined enough to shove their head in will be able to reach!
