A shocking photo of a kitten that briefly popped up on a teenager’s Facebook wall has brought outrage — and landed the boy in a whole heap of trouble.
Both the police and the local SPCA received complaints of animal cruelty after a 14-year-old boy in Nelson Bays, New Zealand, posted a photo showing a kitten being held over a marijuana bong in order to make the cat high.
Police are concerned not only for the animal but also for the well-being of the children involved.
Two of the boys in the photo have been identified by the police, and the investigation is ongoing. The photo has been taken down from Facebook.
Charges of ill treatment to animals carry a sentence of 6 months imprisonment plus a fine of up to $10,000. Drug and parental care charges are possible in this case.
“It’s just stupidity,” says an SPCA spokesman.
