The Humane Society of the United States has released this touching video showing the rescue of a dog from a puppy mill in Jones County, North Carolina.
Adam Parascandola, director of animal cruelty investigations for the Animal Rescue Team, says he was overwhelmed by the rancid odors coming from the run-down building. Once inside, he immediately noticed the cages of dogs with little or no food, as well as their green drinking water.
A long-haired Chihuahua named Billy caught his attention.
When Adam went to open Billy’s cage, he found that the door was rusted shut, which meant it had not been opened in a very long time. Once Adam held Billy in his arms, the dog laid his head against the man’s shoulder.
Part of Billy’s jaw was gone, and he was nothing more than a fragile skeleton underneath all the hair. Adam knew he couldn’t allow this helpless dog to suffer any longer. Life changed for Billy that day.
Not only is his body now free — his spirit is, too. His great personality and friendliness have finally been unleashed.
The Humane Society is sponsoring a “Be a Hero” holiday campaign to raise money to fight puppy mills.
Update, Jan. 19, 2013: We’ve received word that Billy has died. Rest in peace, Billy.
