Hannah Bochart, 24, of Alaska, was shattered recently, when her faithful dog Steve Mason was killed by a wolf.
“I miss Mason like there is a hole in my chest,” she wrote in a beautiful, heartbreaking eulogy online.
She and the 16-year-old dog had shared countless adventures during their many years together.
On March 5, while Bochart was out trekking with Mason and the younger 3 canine family members, the group was confronted by an unanticipated visitor — a large, starving wolf, who quickly went into attack mode.
The wolf pinned down the smallest dog. That’s when Mason jumped in to defend the group.
Bochart watched helplessly as the wolf took Mason’s life and then devoured him right there on the spot. “The wolf got him by the throat and killed him in an instant. It was done in a second,” Bocahrt told the Anchorage Daily News.
Although Mason’s gruesome death could not have been prevented, Hannah Bochart is filled with remorse at not being able to save him.
Mason left this world as a hero, saving not only his human’s life, but also the lives of the 3 younger dogs.
