July 31 is unofficially National Mutt Day, a celebratory day created in 2005 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige, who was also the founder of National Dog Day, National Cat Day, National Puppy Day and more.
National Mutt Day was created for us to celebrate our mixed-breed dogs and call attention to the mixed breeds still waiting for their forever homes.
Do you have a mixed-breed dog? Then we want to hear all about them!
Tell us how your mixed breed entered and changed your life. Did you rescue them from a shelter? Did they just show up on your doorstep one day? Let us know!
For example: My sister is a veterinary technician, and a couple years ago she went to the Dominican Republic for a weeklong seminar. While there, she was disturbed to see so many homeless dogs on the streets. (It’s a big problem there.) So instead of just buying a T-shirt as a souvenir, she brought home a puppy and gave her a new, loving home.
Other stories from our readers:
- Erin (TX): “Izzy is a Boston terrier/Chihuahua mix. I was looking for that mix and found her. She has the same birthday as I, and I brought her home 3 years ago on the 4th of July. She was my first puppy (I have rescued many dogs over the years) and worked my butt off with her. She is totally voice-and-snap-command trained. I love my dog. Lol. She keeps me sane.”
- Erin (OH): “Frankie was an owner surrender as a puppy to a vet office I was volunteering at. Hudson was a 2-year-old at a shelter I volunteered at that only liked women and needed a lady household. CoCo was at the shelter I volunteered at as a chronic runaway adopted and returned 8 times. Ozzie was removed from a puppy mill at a local shelter. Gracie was at a local shelter with the rest of her siblings as an owner-surrendered unwanted litter. That’s my whole current crew of pups.”
How did your mixed-breed miracle change your life for the better? Let us know by July 31 at midnight EST and you could win Petful’s July contest!
The winner will get a Petful T-shirt plus a $50 donation to the nonprofit animal charity of his or her choice.
