My cat is lost!! 🙁 (9 replies)
So I went on a vacation and left my cat with a friend to look after him, after a couple of days my friend let him outside, the first couple of times apparently he would stay in their garden however he has not been seen since a week ago, I'm absolutely upset and just want my cat home, I know posters very often go unoticed but is there any chance the cat could be lured back to their garden or even find it's way back home which is a 20 minute walk? he is scared of cars and is not used to the outside world as he would only go out from the back garden in my home. He is only 2 years old and i'm extremely worried... any help would be very much appreciated.
One true story: The exact same thing happened with me when I left my cat with my parents. My mother knew that my cat was strictly an indoor cat but made her stay outside during the day. Well, one night, my cat was gone. I looked everywhere but to no avail. I never saw her again. Either someone took her or she ran away. Or...my mind can't even go there.
Another true story: My parents had a cat that lived both inside and outside. One day he simply disappeared. Months later, he showed up in very bad shape. But, he did show up.
My point is that you simply don't know what to expect. I am so sorry to tell you this, but I don't know what else to tell you except that we must all be extremely careful with whom we leave our pets.
If I were you, I would continue to look and, more specifically, spend time at your friend's house, particularly outdoors.
Good luck. I feel your pain.
Ah, my cat is an outdoor and indoor cat, however he did adjust to the new environment within the first week, i just wish he would come back to that place since I live quite far for a cat to instinctively come home itself, and thank you for your advice, will definitely remember it next time, if that is! my friend is doing all she can, hopefully it is being effective as neighbours are seeming to help out...
Hi emma, I am so sorry - this is one of the hardest things a pet parent has to go through. I would try putting his kitty litter outside if you still have it. He may smell it and find his way back. Also, network through social media!! It is an incredibly powerful tool and where I live, it is used to great effectiveness in reuniting pet parents and their lost pets. Last week a guinea pig even escaped and was found and returned via Facebook!
Keep trying. The litter box probably still has some of his scent in it -- plastic retains odors over time. (That's why litter boxes have to be replaced periodically.) Also put out a favorite blanket or a well-worn piece of your clothing. Remember, your cat's sense of smell is infinitely stronger than yours.
I'm so sorry to hear he hasn't found his way back yet 🙁 Definitely keep looking, and keep networking in the area - knock on doors and ask neighbors, put up fliers where it's permitted, hang notices in grocery stores, look for local pet-related groups and ask to post with them or on their page, and keep in touch with local shelters and animal control officers!
