Help! At wits end with kitties peeing on EVERYTHING (8 replies)

Ok - bit long winded but bare with me.

I have 6 cats. Down from 10. I inadvertently rescued a pregnant mamma who I could not leave out in the cold. I had at the time already two well adjusted kitties. She had her babies at my home and I immediately started trying to find forever homes for them. I found homes for her and 3 kittens. I was on every social media, calling every rescue place googling my butt off for ways to find these babies homes. Well I never did for the rest. And they grew, and then it was REALLY hard to find homes for them as they were not tiny anymore. SO... here we are with 6 cats. We don't have room, or resources for 6 cats.

"Why did you rescue that momma then if you couldn't take care of her and all the babies?" Really? I was supposed to leave her out to freeze? She was sick. Pregnant. Cold. I couldn't not. I am the person that would usually say that. Don't get animals you can not take care of! But... I couldn't let her die. I had to feed her and get her to vet and give her a warm place to be. It was on the patio for so long! Until she was so pregnant I couldn't ignore it and I couldn't let her have babies in that frozen madness. They would die. I looked for a home for her immediately too until I realized she was pregnant and that was pointless. Excuses I know. Do I regret it? Sometimes! But I bet I would do it again. Bottom line... I have 6 cats that are NOT happy.

They don't have enough room and they don't all love each other. They are peeing EVERYWHERE! I have done SO much research. Changed litter type so many times. I have 9 litter boxes in a 2 bedroom house. I have no room for regular furniture in my tiny home already with out the added problem of 9 litter boxes. But we are doing our level best and its not good enough and I know it. I have been on so many sites and social media practically BEGGING for forever homes for even one kitty. No luck. Its been years now. We live with the entire house smelling so so so bad. It makes us sick, like for real sick. I clean and clean. Nothing helps. No sprays or powders or building of shelves for kitties to walk on or ... just nothing. I cry at night. I can not live like this any longer and I do not know what to do. I need homes for some of the kitties and I just can not find them a place. I sometimes dream I am the type of person that could just toss them out. That's how bad it is. I wish I was a terrible person to animals! How awful is that? I am not. I won't. But its doing a number on me. YES they have all been fixed. To the vet to check for bladder infections and the like. They are healthy and fine just miserable at my house.

Any advice or resources for finding a home for some of them would be extremely helpful.

Hi Kinta!

If it makes you feel better, I would not have been able to leave the momma cat out in the cold either, regardless of the consequences. I know that people - including me - advise others not to get pets if they can't afford them etc., but there are always extenuating circumstances and this is one of them.

I advise to continue working with online groups like you find on Facebook. Reach out to family and friends and make them part of your team - engage them to help you share the pictures and pleas further than you can alone.

You can also talk to local veterinarians' offices. Sometimes they have ideas that we don't think of - or even know of someone who recently lost a pet who might be looking.

Reach out to your local shelters. Ask them for advice. Be honest - let them know your situation and that you're doing your best to find these cats a forever home but that you are at the end of your rope and ask them what ideas they may have.

Above all, take a deep breath and pat yourself on the back! You're doing all that you can for these kitties. It says a lot about you that they've been seen medically and are all fixed. That's commendable! Keep us posted on your journey, and if I think of anything else I'll post again!

Hey Melissa! Thanks for your responce.

Its been 4 years. I have talked to so many vets and rescue places etc. My extended family that does not live with me is over hearing about it because they think .. well if your not gonna just toss em then... ???

The vets and rescue places tend to just shrug alot or hang up on me. Vets especially are just like.. add another litter box! Add another water dish!!  Ugh. My house is nothing but cat food bowls and litter boxes. If I could add another anything I would.  My daughter - bless her is 21 and same way I am unfortunately, would take in another if it needed it. But its making us sick.  I can't keep up with everywhere they are peeing and its just everywhere. There are two I think that do it out of just bitter spite and as often as they can. Its so hard not to be mad at them but I know they are just miserable as well and that is the only way they know how to voice it.

I guess I just need to vent to maybe have some more hope to keep doing this. I was looking forward to enjoying this later part of my life now that I have a home. But its just miserable and feel like it will just always be this way. Just feel trapped.  So thank you for your positive words! I definately need to hear some of that lol

I think we all do, and it's easy to forget the good things we've done when we are faced with so many issues. Don't forget to pat yourself on the back - it's important!

It may not be ideal, but do you have a garage or basement that you could use for some of them? I know some houses don't, I don't have a basement myself. I'll keep thinking!

No, just a small 2 bedroom house. I am building an addition to the back, I already have one in one bedroom, pretty much lives there, and 2 in another. It hasn't helped much but when they roam the house the others gang up on those 3 and it just all gets much louder and more peeing :/ . I wish I had another room! lol

The one in the bedroom alone does the best. But she will pee on anything that is on the floor? But no where else. Which is odd but I'll take it!! Its SOMETHING lol

That's right, it is something! You're doing a fantastic job, keep hanging in there. I think your adding a room on is an awesome idea. Not having a basement is so awkward - I always had them before I moved into this house. All I have is a creepy crawlspace that I absolutely refuse to go into!

Wow, I cannot imagine facing the challenges you have. But it is wonderful that you care for them, I wonder if maybe finding a rescue to work with that you could transport them to, even if it isn't nearby is possible?

As far as creating more space and minimizing the urine, I'm not sure if you have heard of a catio? It sounds like you don't allow them outside, which I don't either, but I built my cats a fully enclosed outdoor catio that allows them to hang outside, where they have a couple additional litter boxes. It freed up space in my small home and they really are so much happier to have it! There are ramps and things for them to climb.

I hope that you are able to find some of your cats homes soon, thank you for all you are going through for their sake!

raemei, that is a GREAT idea if it can be done with her space! I am a pet sitter outside of what I do here, and I have a business Pinterest that I pin all kinds of stuff like that to, because I think it's so neat looking. And a fantastic way to keep kitties safe but still allow them the taste of the outdoors.

Excellent ideas Melissa and raemei. Simply LOVE the catio idea--just like at the local shelter. Big project, though!

I feel for you Kinta, and I too would not have left the sweet Mama cat outside. Good for you!

I unfortunately don't have anything new or creative to add or suggest. The only thing I can suggest is to look for a No Kill shelter or perhaps a nearby farm whose owners are looking for some nice barn cats. They would be guaranteed shelter, food, water, and love and compassion. I know it's not ideal, but it may be necessary just to help you not to feel so surrounded by CAT!! We've taken in strays several times, and even had 10 foster kittens...AT ONE TIME 🙂 Yes, I said, 10!! They all coexisted harmoniously in our spare bedroom, but eventually they went back to live at the shelter for whom we fostered. Well, all except one particularly sweet and rubby all black one--she came back to live with us.

I'll continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers and if I have a light bulb moment, I'll be sure to post.

You are a beautiful person, Kinta! It takes a very special kind of person to do what you are doing for those sweet felines. Kudos!
