Mamma is “very protective of the kids,” says a family friend.

Mamma, an 11-year-old pit bull, went beyond the call of duty recently when she halted a home invasion in Port Clinton, Ohio.

Tony Byrd Jr. adopted Mamma as a service dog for his 11-year-old daughter, Zahara, who has cerebral palsy. The sweet and playful dog knows quite a few tricks and commands.

Her family-defending instincts surfaced earlier this week, when Byrd was in the bathroom and the children were sleeping.

Byrd heard Mamma growl, followed by the painful yells of a human. As Byrd rushed to see what all the commotion was about, he found the front door closing.

A man was seen running toward a parked vehicle, with a trail of of blood in the snow behind him.

Mamma did her best to protect her family. “She’s very protective of the kids,” said a family friend.
