DIY: Here’s an Easy Way to Make a Rope Toy for Your Dog

Be your dog's hero by making rope toys with items from around the house. All you need: scrap fabric and a pair of scissors.

My dog, Flea, loves toys — especially new ones.

I realized I could brighten his day anytime by making rope toys using fabric from around the house. If you already know how to make a simple braid, you can complete this do-it-yourself project in less than 5 minutes.

Just follow the easy instructions below.

Supplies

  • Scrap of fabric (such as an old T-shirt, blanket or towel)
  • Scissors

Directions

1. Cut the fabric into strips.

I used 2 old T-shirts as my fabric. I started at the bottom of the shirts, cutting strips horizontally. You can also use old blankets or towels.

2. Tie a knot in the strips.

I selected 6 strips of fabric and arranged them into 3 sections of 2 for my braid. Tie a knot at the top to hold the strips together.

3. Braid the strips.

Make a basic 3-strand braid. You can add more or fewer strips of fabric depending on how thick you want the toy to be.

4. Finish making the toy.

Tie a knot at the end of the toy. If there is excess fabric at the end of the knots on either side, you can cut it off with scissors.

5. Share it with your pup.

Make sure your dog approves!

These DIY dog toys are great for playing fetch or for solo play. Flea was happy and occupied with his toy for about an hour before settling down for a nap.

We advise that you always supervise your pets when they’re playing with homemade toys, because these toys may be more flimsy than store-bought toys.
